Torah Studies Week 1, Day 1: Creation and God’s Image

A flourishing creation with sea, land, plants, animals, sun, moon, stars, and two human stewards in a garden.

Primary passage: Genesis 1–2
Estimated time: 20–30 minutes
Suggested rhythm: Read Scripture 10–15 minutes; study the notes 5–7 minutes; answer the questions 5–8 minutes; pray for about 1 minute.

Study rule: Read the assigned Scripture before these notes. Scripture is the authority; summaries, connections, and applications below are study helps.

1. Read

Read Genesis 1–2. Notice repeated phrases, how God brings the world into an ordered and life-filled form, and the special place given to human beings.

2. Plain-language summary

Genesis 1 emphasizes that God creates and orders the world by his command. Genesis 2 describes God forming, planting, providing, and giving life. Together the chapters present a world filled with light, land, plants, heavenly lights, animals, and people. Humanity—male and female—is made in God’s image and receives responsibility to rule and care for creation under God. Genesis 2 gives a close view of the garden, human work, God’s command, and the creation of woman as a fitting partner. God rests on the seventh day, blessing and setting it apart.

3. What does this show about God?

4. Command, promise, warning, covenant

Category Observation Reference
Command Humans are to be fruitful, fill the earth, exercise responsible rule, and obey the garden boundary. Genesis 1:28; 2:15–17
Promise No formal covenant promise is stated in these chapters. God’s generous provision is clear. Genesis 1:29–30; 2:8–16
Warning Eating from the forbidden tree brings death. Genesis 2:16–17
Covenant The word covenant is not used here. Some Christian traditions use the later theological term “creation covenant” or “works covenant,” but Genesis 1–2 does not give it that name.

5. Connect to Christ and the New Testament

6. Vocabulary

7. Think and respond

  1. Find two places in Genesis 1 where God calls something good. What does God call the completed creation in Genesis 1:31?
  2. How should being made in God’s image affect the way we treat other people?
  3. What is one part of God’s world you can care for this week?

8. Prayer

Creator and Lord, thank you for life, order, beauty, work, relationship, and rest. Teach us to honor every person made in your image and to care faithfully for what you have made. Through Jesus Christ, amen.
